Assignment: Writing an introduction

Assignment guidelines

• Look at the instructions for Task 9 on page 26.

• This assignment will be done in 2 parts:

- on your blog

- on paper.

• Try writing an introduction to your study following the Task 9 instructions (maximum: 700 words).

• You can use the study you used for Assignment 1 as one of at least 3 studies you must refer to in Stage 2.

On your blog

- Share your introduction online.
- Identify any parts you would like some advice on or that you would like your classmates to pay special attention to.
- Visit at least 2 of your classmates’ blogs (copy and paste the address to your blog post), and give them advice on their introduction. (Be sure to tell which blogs you visited.)
- Evaluate your friends’ advice and then, rewrite your introduction.

On paper
- After you have rewritten your introduction, decide if you want to share it online again or not.
- When you hand in the printed introduction, write Notes at the bottom, and tell me if you took any of your friends’ advice, and why.
- If you didn’t take any of your friends’ advice, just write None, and include the names of people who commented on your blog (use their usernames, in front of “blogspot.com”).

Sample

Previous research on this problem has focused only on adults. This research aims to examine how childhood obesity could lead to early onset diabetes mellitus in Thai children aged 5 years to 10 years.

Notes
- I changed “grown-ups” to “adults” because Mary said “grown-ups” is not an academic word.
- I added the phrase “aged 5 years to 10 years” because Tony said it was unclear how old the subjects were.

Welcome to Thesis Writing!

Remember, this course is focused on you. The more you put in to it, the more you will get out of it. The teacher is only here to help you!

So that we can help each other more efficiently, go ahead and create a Blogger account (if you don't have one already). You'll need to get a Google account for this, if you don't have one yet; your username and password will allow you to access all Google products, like YouTube, Google Drive, and of course, Blogger.

Go ahead and start a new blog by going into Blogger and clicking New Blog. You can name it whatever you like. Once you get the URL, which should be something like "XYZ.blogspot.com", comment on this post with this format:

Your name (Just your first name is fine; no need for your last. Please don't use your nickname.)
Blogger address

Tony Stark
ironmanishere.blogspot.com

I'll collect all the URLs and put them in a post for easy access by all your classmates.

If there are any problems, leave me a comment or email me at the address I gave you in class.
