Our theory was that water polluted with sewage was
responsible for the spread of cholera, not the ‘miasma.’ The results confirm
that hypothesis. Clearly the highest
death toll was among households who drank water from the pump supplied by the
Southwark and Vauxhall Company which drew its supply from the polluted section
of the Thames where sewage was disposed of.
Households using the water from the Lambeth Company had one-tenth the
number of deaths from cholera. This water was drawn from the less polluted
section of the river and it could be identified by the salt content. There were some deaths in households who used
the Lambeth Company also. This is not
surprising as people had to access their water from public pumps in the street
so it is extremely likely that there would be some crossover perhaps because an
individual did not want to queue at the Lambeth Company pump or because
neighbors who used different water shared food or drink and so the infection
could be spread that way. There needs to
be further testing to confirm the hypothesis, but because of the number of
fatalities from cholera, the pumps supplied by the Southwark and Vauxhall
Company should be immediately closed.
